Compostable Bags: A Sustainable Alternative and Their End-of-Life Process
We all know plastic waste is a growing problem, but did you know there’s a better alternative? Compostable bags are designed to break down naturally, leaving no toxic residue behind. Unlike regular plastic that lingers for centuries, these bags return to nature within months when disposed of properly.
How Do Compostable Bags Break Down?
For compostable bags to fully decompose, they need the right environment, following EU composting standards
- Industrial Composting – In a controlled environment with high temperatures (≥58°C), moisture, and microorganisms, compostable bags degrade within 6 months.
- Home Composting – In a backyard compost bin with natural microbial activity, they break down at lower temperatures and take around 12 months to fully degrade.
Once composted, they turn into water, CO2, and organic matter, enriching the soil!
Disposing of Compostable Bags the Right Way
- Use them for food scraps or organic waste
- Check for compostable certification (not all "biodegradable" bags are truly compostable!)
- Send them to an industrial composting facility or compost at home if certified
